Overview

Reporting to the VP, Strategic Development, the Director - Strategic Development a key member of the team responsible for creating and executing the Strategic Plan of Atlas Air Worldwide. With the input and direction from the VP Strategic Development, and SVP Strategic Development, the Director, Strategic Development will be responsible for

  • assisting in creating the Corporate Strategic Plan Document for Atlas Air Worldwide
  • analyzing macroeconomic trends and projecting macroeconomic conditions
  • reviewing and analyzing industry trends and opportunities
  • assessing competitor actions and capabilities
  • analyzing new business opportunities including new strategic product/services, geographic expansion, fleet development, partnerships and potential mergers and acquisitions
  • assisting in the execution strategies and projects identified in the Strategic Plan


As a key contributor to Atlas' strategic planning, the Director Strategic Development will work towards ensuring that Atlas Air Worldwide is well prepared for future growth and expansion. In this highly cross-functional role, the incumbent will need to interact pro-actively with other key functions including operations, finance, legal, human resources and government affairs.

The Director Strategic Development will need to be well informed about industry developments and as such, will be expected, over the long term, to develop extensive contacts in the industry which will allow him/her to spot industry trends and conditions that represent meaningful opportunities for Atlas.

The position will be based at Atlas' headquarters in Purchase, New York, with some travel domestically or internationally as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • As a key member of the Sales and Marketing Team, contribute to the overall strategic direction and business plan of Atlas Air Worldwide by participating in the ongoing strategic planning process and actively support a clear and compelling corporate vision and mid- and long-term business objectives.
  • Working together with the VP Strategic Development and SVP Strategic Development to contribute to the development and implementation of an appropriate market-driven strategy to ensure profitable growth, diversification and future success of Atlas Air Worldwide.
  • Annual update of the Strategic Plan document including updating the key macroeconomic, industry and company conditions.
  • Analyze various opportunities in terms of the risk, return, and overall strategic value to Atlas.
  • Assist in executing against the goals and objectives identified in the Strategic Plan.
  • Provide timely and accurate reporting on the overall development of key strategic projects and performance results of other special projects and initiatives under his/her direction.
  • Actively participate in new business pursuits designed to introduce new accounts to existing service lines and capabilities. Support the identification, evaluation, and pursuit of new business development opportunities for the business in close collaboration with the functional Sales Leaders.
  • Support the ongoing process to cultivate and consummate appropriate partnerships and strategic alliances that will maximize the value of the business.


Qualifications

  • Ideally, a minimum of 8 years of experience in the sales and marketing of products/services to the airline community.
  • Very strong analytical skills and comprehensive experience from functions such as Finance, Strategic Planning and Analysis, Fleet Management or Operations.
  • Experience marketing and selling in the aviation-related community on a business-to-business basis, likely having worked in one or more of the following sectors featuring long sales cycles and big ticket items:
    • ACMI and air charter services
    • Aircraft and aviation equipment lessors
    • Airline service providers (e.g., ground handling, catering)
    • Providers of outsourced services (e.g., information technology systems)
  • A proven record of working successfully and collaboratively with external and internal customers to deliver value-added, customer-driven processes solutions.
  • A willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed to support Atlas' strategic development initiatives.
  • An undergraduate degree in aviation management, engineering, business or economics and ideally, an M.B.A.
